Creating an alphabet booklet to review different content area studies & vocabulary

o Print the letter template for each student or group of students. Use the included instructions for creating an alphabet booklet. Have students track, review or demonstrate their learning by including vocabulary about the topic being studied along with illustrations, graphics and other visual aids to support their learning.

Creating the alphabet for your high frequency Word Wall

o Print the letter template on a heavy paper such as cardstock. Have students create a sentence including a word starting with the letter. Then students will illustrate the sentences and write the complete sentence in heavy black ink at the bottom of their illustration. After students create the alphabet, hang the alphabet for your high frequency word wall words. You may wish to laminate the student created alphabet letters before hanging on the wall.

Reviewing vocabulary for content area studies

o At the end of a content area study for math, science or social studies, you may wish to have students create a vocabulary wall of the important vocabulary and concepts learned during the unit. To review their learning, students would illustrate different concepts or vocabulary words for each letter of the alphabet. These student created vocabulary and concept cards could be displayed on a bulletin board or wall to show their learning about the content area study.

Tracking vocabulary during a content area unit of study

o Alternatively, rather than using the alphabet template at the end of a content area study, this could be used to track vocabulary and concepts learned throughout the content area unit of study. 

Academic Vocabulary Board for Reading and Writing

o The alphabet letters could be used to track academic vocabulary for reading and/or writing. Students could illustrate new concepts, strategies and terms as they are learned and practiced within the literacy block of instruction.
